Hi everyone-

Razz, Patti's Bernese Mt. Dog may have bone cancer.

Razzy is doing very well and one of the things that Patti is doing is the ketogenic diet.

This diet is higher in protein and fat and is designed to help starve abnormal cells, like those of cancer, by inducing a state of metabolic ketosis.

This means that fats become the main fuel source for the cells in the body, and not sugars or carbs.

@jenbridwell talked a bit about this diet in another post.

We'll be diving even deeper during this year's cancer webinar-course this fall.

Patti had been buying a pre-made ketogenic diet from Valiant food which works with the Keto-Pet Sanctuary.

They are doing some awesome work there!

But Razz got bored without his usual diet variety.

So she decided to make her own based on information supplied by Darwin's and Answer's.

Here's what Darwins says:

Ingredients (everything is in a 1:1 ratio):

Try to purchase grass-fed beef and organic vegetables where possible

Ketogenic Diet -use a 1:1 ratio of ingredients -Adult Beef Formula Balanced (Coconut Oil)

4 pounds of 85% Lean Ground Beef

½ (0.5) pound Beef Liver

1-pound Organic Broccoli

0.60 (17g) Ounces of Calcium Carbonate (Egg Shell Powder or Oyster Shell Powder, Coral Calcium)

1-3.5 ounce can of Sardines (in water) (Source of EPA & DHA)

¼ (0.25) Ounce Hempseed (hempseed meal) (source of LA)

½ (0.5) ounce NOW kelp Powder

1/3 of 1 SoftGel Vitamin E supplement 400IU (1g=1softgel)

4 Softgels Nature Made Cod Liver Oil Vitamin D (130IU/sftgl (1g=1softgel)

¼ Ounce brazil Nuts (about 2 medium nuts) Substitute (4.2 ounces Chia Seeds)

1 Zinc Supplement (50mg/cap) Solaray

1 Whole Raw egg (discard shell), Med. (1egg=55g)
5 ¼ ounces of Coconut Oil

1 whole egg weighs about 55 grams

If you cannot source Brazil nuts, you can substitute 4.2 ounces of Chia seeds

Supplements: most capsules or tablets weight roughly 1 gram

Zinc supplement-any brand will work, if the tablet/capsule is as close to 50 mg/tablet

Ditto for Vitamin E target 400 IU/soft gel

Now Kelp Meal (for Iodine) Iodine content is 150mg/g

Calcium Carbonate source-you may purchase Now calcium product or use egg shells, coral calcium or oyster shell calcium. Bone meal is acceptable, just make sure it hasn’t been irradiated.

Hempseed or Hemp seed meal is fine

CANCER

USING FOOD AS MEDICINE

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER NUTRITION

AnswersTM raw diets are formulated with protein and fat in the proper ratio that will not feed cancer cells and will not tax the liver, intestines, or kidneys. These formulas are rich in minerals, live enzymes, cancer- fighting fats, and ensure suitable calorie intake in order to meet pets’ compromised energy needs.
THE APPROPRIATE FAT-TO-PROTEIN RATIOS

Answers unique formulation of a low-carb, low-glycemic diet can help prevent, manage and overcome serious pet health issues such as seizures and neurological disorders, compromised immune systems, weight issues, diabetes, and cancer.

ANSWERSTM RECOMMENDED KETO DIET

Keto is a high fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet designed to lower blood glucose and induce ketosis in pets.

KEY BENEFITS
+ Effortless digestion
+ Easy on the elimination organs
(kidneys and liver)
+ Immune system boost
+ Detoxifies of the body
Contains alkylglycerols, fats that increase white blood cell count and boost
immune cells
Contains cancer- ghting fat, which lowers the risk of cancer and shrinks tumors

+ STARVE CANCER CELLS
Cancer cells feed off sugar. Dry kibble diets with grain (grain-free varieties) are 60%+ carbohydrates that convert to sugar. Answers DetailedTM diets have 2% carbohydrates from added vegetables, and our StraightTM formula has no carbohydrates.

+ PREVENTING CANCER GROWTH Taurine is an amino acid found in high concentrations in goat’s milk, goat’s milk whey, and heart tissue. It has many health bene ts, including antineoplastic effects—which means it inhibits or prevents the growth and spread of tumors or malignant cells.

+ IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOST
Glutathione is considered the most potent antioxidant, and essential for the immune system to exert its full potential. It is most abundant in raw eggs and raw milk. Answers Detailed formulas contain 2.5% organic eggs from free-range, pasture-raised hens—an excellent source of glutathione along with Answers AdditionalTM Raw Goat’s Milk.

+ DETOXIFICATION WITH KOMBUCHA Detailed beef and pork formulas for dogs contain kombucha (fermented decaffeinated green tea). Kombucha is rich in glucuronic acid, a compound used by the liver for detoxi cation, along with many other important nutrients produced through fermentation.

+ DETOXIFICATION WITH AZOMITE®
Minerals are required to trigger enzymes. Proper natural mineral availability prevents mineral displacement by heavy metals, which can lead to cancer. Azomite naturally detoxi es the body of heavy metals.

+ METABOLIC THERAPY
Answers’ raw diets contain food enzymes, and our raw goat’s milk contains more than 60 different enzymes. Enzyme therapy is a part of some forms of metabolic therapy. It is thought that enzymes remove a protective coating from cancer cells, allowing white blood cells to identify and attack them.

+ CANCER-FIGHTING FAT
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is found in higher amounts in grass-fed dairy animals. A diet high in CLA lowers the risk of cancer and shrinks tumors.

+ ANTI-CANCER EFFECTS
Omega-3 fatty acids possess anti-cancer properties. Raw milk, egg, and meat provide higher omega-3 content. Our Fermented Fish Stock contains over 1200 mg omega-3 fatty acids per ounce.

You're welcome Dr. Sara.

Thank you for this post! Maybe we could get Billy Hoekman from Answers for one our Empower Hours.

Great idea Liz!

We'll try arrange an Answer's Ketogenic diet EH!

Well, my dog and I have been close to this for years:) It's wonderful that they are getting the word and the support out. It's no surprise that a well-proportioned raw diet is so close to a "curative" diet. There's nothing like eating well in the first place, for both species - you don't have to wait until you're ill.

I thought Bill Hoekman owns Green Juju. Does he also own Answers?
