Can flea medication cause anxiety since it affects the Neurological system?

Can flea medication cause anxiety since it affects the Neurological system? I gave my cat virbac flea medicine in January and she seemed to have a significant increase in meowing. At the same time, I went out of town for 10 days while my partner fed them daily. (she works from home) bu leaves in the evening and my cat stays away from her because she’s a little scared of her. Also, the day before I left on my trip we put two of our senior ferals to sleep in our kitchen. She may have been feeling the spirits of the Ferals. It’s hard to know what exactly, if not all of the above, caused her to be crying out alot throughout the day. She also seemed to want to go outside. (I started to take her out on a leash). She got scared in the alley by a car and now regressed and only wants to go out in front and in back of our door but that’s it.) She also had a session with an animal communicator prior to the Farrell’s getting put to sleep and me going out of town , who did some work on her energy because she has been a scaredy-cat. I also started her on Jackson Galaxie scaredy-cat. . So lots of reasons why she has become very vocal. Almost as if she is anxious. I do not give a flea medication on a regular basis. Maybe two times a year. my question is I’m going out of town again and I need to give flea medication to all my three cats again. Two of them are indoor outdoor and have brought some fleas in. I’m concerned if this could aggravate her neurological system potentially causing more anxiety? Do you think there’s any correlation to this? I know there are a lot of variables I mentioned, and it’s hard to know exactly what’s going on. It could be a combination of things. Thank you so much for your feedback. By the way, she was meowing a lot that was reminding us of the feral that we put down. We started to wonder if the feral’s spirit was communicating through our cat because of the similarity and frequency of the meowing. So I started to talk out loud to my feral, who crossed the rainbow and it has gotten better. Thank you so much for your thoughts and feedback.

Hey Anna!

Yup. However, it's more of a correlation than a causation.

The effect is dependent on the susceptibility of the individual. And the degree of susceptibility is partially dependent on what else is going on.

For example, the effect of the euthanasias and other emotional stuff, effect of diet, other meds. etc.

Perhaps start by focusing on your own mindset regarding going away. Perhaps visualize how happy you are to be going away. And how great it will be for the kitties.

You might also want to consider consulting a new animal communicator (or two!).

They will be fine!

Got it. I gave the two indoor/outdoor cats virbac flea medicine today. I held off on giving Jinxie (the one I am referring to in the thread). Is it best protocol to give her flea medicine as well in case there’s a flea in the house or the others carry one in even though they got treated? Also, I am having a friend stay at my house to look after the cats for 4 days. They have been around her before when they were little Ferals outdoors and a few times at my house but Jinxie is always scared of everyone. I am torn between having her stay over vs having my neighbor only drop in and drop off food for them (they know her). The benefit to having my friend stay is she can let my indoor outdoor cat in and out , especially in the winter. I think she will hide in the closet a lot and I hope she will come out to eat. I think she will get used it it, right?? Thank you for your advice.

Exactly what are you using?

Either way should be fine. Whatever will cause the least stress (and use Stress Stopper frequently for all the cats!).

I am using virbac. I gave both indoor/outdoor cats a dose today. I’m hesitant giving it to Jinxie in case it triggers anything. I also think she may be a little special needs. She was the runt of the litter. Your thoughts? I don’t know what’s less stressful. ( friend over or being alone) Either way I will give rescue remedy drops to all of them. Thank you!

That's very possible.

Cat specialist @Dr. Jean Hofve calls Stress Stopper Rescue Remedy on steroids. Perhaps order some of that.
