Cautious, yes. Are your kitties indoor only?

Where do you source your food? They should be the ones surveilling for you.

My own cats eat both Small Batch and Viva chicken/duck/turkey and I'm not all concerned.
@Dr. Jeff are you cooking any of the Viva or Small Batch at the moment? It didn't sound like it.

And both of those brands use HPP for their poultry formulas (and S&C may use it for all of their "raw" foods).

· Commercial raw pet diets using HPP are most likely safe. The FDA has ordered raw pet food makers to account for bird flu in their safety plans, but has not set any time limits or specifications. I have to think that manufacturers using HPP have adjusted their settings to those known to inactivate avian flu (there is research on this).

· I would not recommend feeding any raw, dehydrated or freeze-dried food that has not undergone HPP unless you cook it. The recommended temperature is 165 oF, which is well done, but 140 oF should be enough to inactivate the virus.

I thought of this vitamin powder containing eggyolk that I give my cats.

The same powder is also available with butternut squash powder instead of eggs.

Do cats benefit more from butternut squash in it than eggs?
Or if it's not so good to give up chicken because of bird flu.

@Dr. Jeff I have been transitioning Bella and Maya over to Viva which looks more "fresh" (i.e. red) than the Primal and Stella & Chewy I have been feeding. So here's a weird question for you. I currently have been defrosting their food nuggets from the previous brands each day in a plastic container typically. But defrosting the Viva this way, a lot more blood and sticky stuff from the product itself clings to my containers. What do you recommend for storing and defrosting the meats in the fridge? Thank you!!

Depending on how much time until I need it, I just take the package out of the freezer and leave it on the counter or refrigerator. Then peel back the top and leave it in whatever container I have available that it will fit in. Yes, some of the tissue juice and meat may stick to the container. When the food is gone I just rinse it out or let Maya lick it clean.

@Dr. Jeff Now that's a new idea. Keep the meat in the package and fit the package inside a sealable container. I never thought of that. Let most of the mess stay inside the packaging! This is why asking any question helps! Thank you.
