UTI Senior canine

Good Morning,
My 14 yr old female Havanese just began needing to urinate constantly. This just began all of a sudden this morning. Does this warrant a trip to the vet? Or, are there any suggestions that might be helpful? She's very uncomfortable and won't go on a piddle pad.

I'm so sorry to hear about your pup's urinary urgency.

Great question about the trip to the vet!

The answer is yes. A vet exam and any indicated diagnostic tests is undeniably helpful for revealing information about the dis-ease process. However, the bigger picture about what to do, is only partially informed by the diagnostic results.

Did you end up going to the vet today?

How was your pup's BEAM when she wasn't needing to urinate? How was her BEAM last night?

Is she having any other symptoms like going off to be on her own, drinking more, etc.?

Regardless of diagnosis (which will be informed by a vet visit) or treatment, think about using some general supportive care such as extra fluids, vitamin C, cranberry, d-mannose, etc.

Also, if you have a homeopath, they might be able to use your pup's symptoms to help decide which acute homeopathic remedy to try.

Have you used homeopathy before?

David brought Fibi to the emergency hospital and though she did finally get treated, Fibi wasn't taken for over six hrs... constantly squatting and just terribly uncomfortable. Like everywhere, they are understaffed. One vet for all of the dogs in the area on a busy Saturday. There were many cases more urgent than Fibi's and so it goes...
We also had an appt with Dr. Judith Herman yesterday. we talked a lot about her current remedy (phosphorus 30c) and all is looking pretty good, tweaking what is necessary.
We have some new tools to work with if this acute UTI happens again and even some preventive options which we'll be stocking up on.

Our Cat had his only UTI and we used Animal Essentials Tinkle Tonic which worked fast and well. Got labs before and after to be sure he was clear. I have a question about this too. If a dog is missing the Puppy Pad and peeing all over the House, can giving Cranberry/D-Mannose or Tinkle Tonic be harmful if they don't have a UTI? @Dr. Christina @Dr. Jeff

Probably not harmful, though we don't want to treat a problem that doesn't exist, or mask a symptom we need to notice. Figuring out the *why* would be important for this sort of situation. Increased urination, especially in odd places, is one big way pets tell us they need help.

One way to discover the cause is to get a physical, especially if you have created your holistic care team and have a holistic vet nearby. If you have not, read this article.

You could also check with an intuitive, especially if the tests and exam are normal, to discover what your pup is thinking.
