QEST 4 testing

I wanted to know if QEST 4 testing would help to figure out how to treat Teddy’s condition. Is it like bioanalysis? With Teddy dx of idiopathic epilepsy, questionable pancreatic cancer, subclinical hypoglycemia ( he goes 8 hrs before eating and is fine) and polycythemia since April of 2019, he only had one episode of seizing. Was it a stroke? Why did the seizure occur all specialists don’t know. All tests negative except for mildly high rbc.

I am coming up to a crossroads because in dec he has had some neurological changes. I am going to have another blood test to see if his rbc are increased, the same or decreased. Then the question is to do a procedure called controlling. Has anyone had to endure that with their cat? I don’t want to go there yet because his BEAM is at 95%. However, At night with total darkness he seems to have a change, something in him aggravates him, he seems ‘on alert” looking around, highly energetic, jumping from bed to floor, running from room to room, trying to find his brother who is hiding from him because h acts so crazy when everyone is sleeping. He has this high vocal calling voice to his brother and then lays down like a victim! So 2 nights ago I left all the lights on and he settled right down and went to sleep. Four hrs later I try to turn the light off he will get up and start acting crazy so it’s something with total darkness?

The change since December is some circling, and jolting when in a deep sleep. I have changed phosphorus dosing and the jolting has stopped but Teddy is revisiting his high crazy energy at night that he had prior to seizing, some head lowering and slight cough have returned and so I want to check to see if his rbc count is changed. If it’s high I have to decide if I want Teddy to go thru drawing blood off to lower count. If he only needed it once a yr it would not be bad but every 4 months, I think would be horrible. Is there a polycythemia expert out there to consult with?

What tests should I have done to zero-in on what is going on? Would Vit D and specific feline lipase also be good to do as well as a neoplasma index . They may not even know how to do this?.

So anyone heard of this QEST 4 test and would this be helpful? Is there an expert who has handles polycythemia and how often to do the controlling therapy, and what tests would be best when Teddy gets his blood drawn based on his conditions. Thank you.

That depend on your HMDM Step 1 Goal.

If your goal is to get a diagnosis for polycytemia then the test to do are specialized RBC parameters combined with a bone marrow.

Bone marrow evaluation (a semi-invasive and uncomfortable procedure that often requires anesthesia) is readily available, but I'll have to investigate where you'd get RBC parameters checked.

Personally, I'd be going for better fine-tuning using homeopathy rather than any diagnostic that's invasive.

So anyone heard of this QEST 4 test and would this be helpful?

Thank you Dr Jeff! I don’t know the full name of pulling off blood except for the word controlling, it’s a treatment for polycythemia. I am thankful for your thoughts on Teddy. I also feel Homepathy is the way to go!

I won’t go for a bone marrow test for a true dx because the HMDM Goal #1 is to keep his BEAM at 95% or better. Is this an appropriate Goal?

Do you think rechecking his blood annually is a good idea to see if any changes in RBC have occurred? Is a basic CBC, which is what he had done last June the same thing as RBC parameters?

And what other blood test would be helpful for Homepathic intervention knowing what he has. He to me is not showing any signs of hypoglycemia and yet the blood test last June put the medical staff in panic over his condition yet, he is very happy and content here at home with a BEAM of 95%!

So is it a good idea to recheck his basic labs to see where he is at? And ask for a few more tests when taking him for an annual recheck to his local internal medicine specialists? Sometimes I think the seizure he had last April, could that have been a clot caused by his high RBC count from January of that year. When in the hospital taking blood it was less and then in June of that year Here are the values:

Dr Jeff, in the case of the kitty with the change in dose and symptoms recurring that were of old before the phosphorus Teddy is experiencing the same thing. His symptoms of lowering his head and briefly coughing are far and few between but they are of old symptom . The red line on his tooth is back, not as dark and not as definitive but is wider and pinkish in color, so I know some symptoms are resurfacing and that is why we increased his dose of phosphorus to a stronger concentration. I will co tiniest to monitor the 4 P’s and will get blood work done. Do you think drawing blood will put Teddy at risk for a blood clot if his roc are higher this time. I remember in Jan 2019 Teddy local vet the tick drew blood from his neck, then in April that is when he seized or stroked and I live in constant fear that he will stroke out. What emergency remedy is there in case I ever come home and he is paralyzed? What would you use? Thank you!

Attaching the scanned brochure for QEST4 I received at Charlie's vet appointment. I chose not to have it done now, primarily due to the cost. If I'm remembering correctly, it was $400. Still in the research and decision phase!

Yes, Kristen, thank you! Teddy’s biggest risk is his polycythemia, I think that one time seizure was possibly a blood clot in his brain, and I am struggling with how much this test can really help him except to recommend a remedy that is better than what he is using now, if I read this right, and I fear nothing can help increase production of RBC except for taking blood out of him periodically. I wish I could speak to a cat owner who had a cat with polycythemia. It’s a horrible thing because if his RBC is up then the question is does he live his life always pooling off blood? And how often. It would not be too bad if it’s once a yr but I have no idea how fast he makes RBC except to do a blood test on him and I think even that is risky as it could result in him athrowing a clot from the draw itself!

I have experience and am certified with Qest4. I have been using for a bit of time and am really loving this as an adjunct tool. However, reading the bloodwork posted, I am curious how the diagnosis of polycythemia has come to be. I think I must be missing something. Polycythemia is typically diagnosed when PCV/HCT is >60%. This patient is anemic according to posted bloodwork. So perhaps I have missed something in the labwork. Updated labs are always helpful. I am a firm believer in Western diagnosis and alternative/complimentary treatments!! Best of both worlds.

Dr Erin, I am most thankful for your insight. Could you please look at the hospital discharge from April 2019, as I don’t know why they labeled him polycythemia. He did have a high RBC in Jan 2019 of 64, but his primary vet thought he was dehydrated.

He has also been on Phosphorus 30c for over 8 months which he was doing fine. However over past few weeks his old symptoms began to come back like crouching his head low, then coughing after he is in that position. It stops immediately if I distract him. He also acts bizarre in complete darkness like at night so I keep the lights on all night! And he seems to be calmer.

He is on phenobarbital and cbd, a few supplements like cucurmin, feline cardiac by standard process and Ubiquinol, Reishi mushroom and garlic 3 times a week a pinch.

The phosphorus strength increase helped to eliminate the circling, and occasional jolting which has stopped but can you please tell me what recheck of labs should I do when we go for a recheck in feb. I hope I get to talk with you. Thank you!

I live on pins and needles each day thinking he may stroke or seize again if his blood is thick and I am even scared he will throw a clot if blood is drawn. Can you shed some light..

Dr Erin, thank you for your comments. Teddy was given polycythemia dx because he had in Jan 2019 a RBC of 65, however he was just getting over a bout of dehydration. If possible could you please look at the two attachments and see what you think. Teddy has been doing very well, no breakthroughs but this past month started to have some peculiar neurological behaviors, like circling for seconds once a week, or when in a deep sleep on the couch jumped because he acts like a jolt of electricity went through him. Since strengthening his phosphorus dose these symptoms have stopped however he is still when in a kitty tree lowering his head like a lower posturing and then jumps off and starts coughing.

He is on low dose phenobarbital and cbd oil plus daily phosphorus, it was suggested QEST 4 but I would have to have whatever type of blood the test needs sent to someone who does this. And could a one time determine the right remedy for Teddy, NY does not have this test so I would ask the specialist to send it out. I would love to hear your impressions on Teddy after looking at the 2 reports. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing all this info. This makes much more sense now to me, however it would interesting to chart labs every 3-4 months.
I think Teddy might benefit greatly from intravenous ozone therapy. Do you have someone that can do that locally? It helps thin the blood naturally among many other wonderful things.
Also I am happy to perform Qest4 for you. I need a few easy samples that you can collect at home.
In the meantime, new blood samples are important as well as a urine: CBC/Chem/T4/UA.
