Mouth tumour in dog

hello

my name is Amelia and I am new here.

our beauty ful 4 year old black Labrador has been diagnosed with a mouth tumour today, he had a general anaesthetic today to remove some so we can get a biopsy to find out if it’s malignant or benign but they think it’s malignant. We will find out in a few days the exact diagnosis.

i am beside myself and naturally want him to heal. I am also a naturopath so understand looking at the individual.

although I have studied homeopathy I have never used on my dog and don’t know where to start with this tumour.

we only found out Axel had the tumour as there was blood on one of our kids toys other than that he was full of his normal energy.

Axel is a failed guide dog so we didn’t get him till he was one year old. He had elbow dysplasia which we somehow cured switching to a grain free diet and lots of love & cuddles!

last year he also had stomach surgery as he swallowed a plastic bag (he will put anything in his mouth!)

he is still on a grain free diet and has mainly been on Ziwi peak but recently I switched to raw meat in the morning, celery/apple/wild blueberries/b12/barley green grass/ a little chia or flaxseed for lunch and a raw bone at dinner as per the medical medium. I am terrified this change in diet has caused this. I added ester C and olive leaf extract today to hopefully help the tumour. He weighs just under 30kg.

I guess I would love some guidance on what to do next as we want our boy to heal as naturally as possible .

It's great to see you here!

You're so right about his individuality (externally observable + internally measurable symptoms) being the key.

Let's therefore collect as many individual characteristics (individualization is what a vet homeopath will do during the initial 1-2 hour consultation).

For example, which part of his mouth (gums, tongue, check, etc?)

What side is the tumor on?

Upper or lower?

Is there anything else at all going on with him (now or in the past)?

For example, what were his elbow dysplasia symptoms and in what way was he cured of it (x-rays?).

When was his last rabies (or any) vaccination?

The diet change did not cause the mouth tumor!

It probably didn't even trigger it.

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly, I really appreciate it.

His tumour is on lower right jaw (please see attached photos)

In his past he had elbow dysplasia ( I have attached the report we had with more details, no x-rays sorry) at 14mths (when we got him), he was on so many anti inflammatories and couldn't walk without a limp let alone run. As a naturopath I felt this wasn't good so took him off all anti inflammatories (over a couple days) and changed his diet to grain free. I added some supplements but nothing consistent eg fermented cod liver oil. Within a month he was absolutely fine and one of the fastest dogs in the park! He likes short sharp bursts of activity but doesn't love to run with you, prefers being off lead and exploring.  He likes playing with other dogs is particular who he likes! He won't rumble like a 1 year old but is still very playful and in great shape.

He also had stomach surgery last year as mentioned, he swallowed a plastic bag and it swelled in his stomach so we were lucky he got through it (very easy good recovery).

Also when he was about two years old he ran into a tree branch at high speed at dusk and cut his eye, needing stitches.

No rabies in Australia but his last vaccination was with the guide dogs in 2015, he is desexed.

Thank goodness the diet change did not cause the mouth tumour, thank you. Can I continue with this diet or is there a more specific one you would recommend?

I will upload the biopsy results when they arrive.

Me again, some other points that might help you with our boy! He is:

Friendly but not overly social
Tolerant
Will do anything for food and will eat anything (can get into possum poo and cat poo and my parents house )
Loving
Caring
Non-aggresive
A bit of a sook ! (loves a couch!)
Loves marking his territory with his wee!
Loves a good bushwalk
Swims in the ocean (loves it) or pool, can do big jumps in the middle of the pool!
Likes fetching a stick or ball a few times but then gets bored!
Can jump in the air up to my hip!

Hi Amelia-

Regarding diet and potentially cancerous tumors, it's best to minimize carbohydrates and sugars.

Especially any dry food (even grain free).

The best diet for Axel is the one which is highest in Vitality. This will promote his natural healing.

Fresh, local raw meats, organs and glands in variety.

Including green tripe.

If there are any local farms from which you can buy meats, that would be great.

And use the 1:1 kale:wild blueberry blend in his meals.

Axel had a chest x Ray when they took some of the tumour out and it was clear thank goodness, I think I can get you s copy if you would like? They also took some surrounding lymph tissue to see if anything has spread.

Until you get the biopsy results, minimize disrupting the tumor by giving bones.

In general, the answer is yes (pets with mouth tumors, which are often benign, can have raw bones).

How often varies based on the size, type and quantity of bones and will vary for each individual pet.

we have the results, Axel's mass is an acanthomatous ameloblastoma. They said it’s not the one that spreads and stays local thank goodness but they are still recommending surgery for part removal of his jar. Our next appointment is 30/10 and they may even operate that day.

naturally we’d love your opinion on this.

i’m guessing he can still have bones? And how much raw meat can he have daily? And how much organ meat daily? He weighs 29kg

Good news Amelia!

This what vets used to call a benign epulis.

In the past these were most commonly left alone in the US though nowadays treatment is more aggressive.

The location of Axel's could be problematic (for getting abraded).

Regardless, partial jaw removal seems like a pretty dramatic solution.

You might want to ask your vet about other options like electrocautery, cryosurgery or even radiation therapy.

Yes to raw meaty bones! The amount of meat (any kind) is based on her appetite for it, her weight, stools, etc.

It’s another state away but we are going to qld over Christmas so if you could give me the details that would be wonderful and hopefully he can help with recovery and prevention.

Axel had to have another biopsy as they did a CT scan to see how big the tumour is and it’s quite big so they are worried it could be squamous cell carcinoma.

If it’s the benign tumour only we feel we have no choice but to remove the lower right side of his jaw but if it’s the SCC Radiation may be best, the sad thing is it usually grows back in a year.

it’s not a SCC. Our vet is still deciding whether he things surgery or radiation is best as it is so aggressive. I’m guessing you would still recommend radiation? Do you know the risks of radiation on a young dog (Axel is only 4), and can radiation sometimes turn benign tumours malignant?

Oh, I'm not recommending radiation.

I meant to just mention it as another option.

Depending primarily on whether the tumor is radio-sensitive.

I haven't seen recent stats, but believe that partial mandibulectomy is more successful and has better treatment outcomes (but which also don't account for quality of life).

Personally, I'd start right away with homeopathy.

And see how much Axel's body can control and possibly even eliminate the tumor.

But it's also very important to balance potentially curative treatment against growth of the tumor.

In other words, I'd wait to do chemo or radiation if the mouth tumor is shrinking homeopathically. But not if it grows despite homeopathy.

Does that make sense?

I ask because you will definitely want to work with a surgeon (vs. a general vet who does surgery) for this kind of surgery.

Axel has never had a remedy.

i will call around to see if I can get access to a homeopath here, is it the same remedies we use on humans?

if we try the homeopathy how quickly are we likely to see results? As his tumour is very aggressive and big.

will we need to do another CT scan to check after homeopathy treatment? (He’s already had two!!)
