This post is a result of the research for the HA! upcoming Anatomy of Pet Wellness and Cancer ebook.
One of the hot topics in both the human and animal cancer field is the relationship between inflammation and cancer.
Acute inflammation is your pets' bodies normal response to injuries or infections and is a vital part of the immune response.
It is one of the healing mechanisms of the immune system that allows all living beings to survive.
You may hear about the immune responses of infection and inflammation used together, but they mean very different things.
Infection refers to the invasion and multiplication of a pathogen within the body, while inflammation is the body's protective response against infection. It's the same relationship as between injury (like after a splinter) and inflammation:
Inflammation is a complex biological response that has been recognized since the beginning of medicine.
Acute inflammation is the result or a stressor such as a toxin or stressor and if it persists, it can become a chronic and problematic process that can lead to cancer.
Chronic inflammation is associated both with distressing symptoms like pain, swelling and loss of function, which are the same symptoms as are seen with cancer.
Decreasing chronic inflammation reduces cancer risk.
As you can read in the research articles, there is new important information being learned all the time.
The take home is that there are Holistic Actions! you can take when you see signs of inflammation in your pets.
If there's no obvious trigger, like an injury at the park, and you see inflammatory symptoms the best way to help put them into context is with an examination by your veterinarian.
If there's still nothing found, as is the case with Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO), then your knowing that these symptoms are your pets bodies are working may help decrease the anxiety or uncertainty.
There are many strategies to support your pets' bodies while they heal, and to stimulate the healing response. Things like homeopathy, essential oils, flower essences, etc.
The bottom line is to use gentle support, and not aggressive measures, while you investigate the internal process.

Concepts of tissue injury and cell death in inflammation: a historical perspective - PubMed
Emerging evidence indicates that the molecular mechanisms of cell death have regulatory roles in inflammation and that the molecular changes that are associated with different forms of cell death affect the course of inflammation in different ways. In this Timeline article, we discuss how our...

Immunity, inflammation, and cancer: an eternal fight between good and evil - PMC
Cancer development and its response to therapy are strongly influenced by innate and adaptive immunity, which either promote or attenuate tumorigenesis and can have opposing effects on therapeutic outcome. Chronic inflammation promotes tumor ...

Inflammation and cancer - PMC
Recent data have expanded the concept that inflammation is a critical component of tumour progression. Many cancers arise from sites of infection, chronic irritation and inflammation. It is now becoming clear that the tumour microenvironment, which ...
