I’m confused…. I thought fibre helps with pooping? Or is it different for dogs?
Fiber helps to bulk up stool. When the stool is bulked up, the urge to go comes. However, if way too much fiber is fed, this can start to cause a blockage from a fiber overdose. If the dog keeps straining and trying to go, this indicates constipation. It is true that every dog differs in the amount of fiber required. If you suspect constipation, I would stop all fiber, which means chia seeds and sweet potatoes. Feed meat only and if possible make a paste of slippery elm bark powder and water and feed that with the meat. This will coat the digestive tract in mucous and help move things along.
Signs of constipation mean straining to go and nothing coming out. Chia seeds are very high in fiber. You mentioned he drinks chia seed water all day. That's alot of fiber...maybe too much.
Others here may have suggestions for constipation. However, more fiber for an already constipated dog can cause problems.
