@GinnyW - I love your long posts, Ginny, especially about raw feeding/RMBs. This is such great info, and I feel confident enough to add a lamb neck to the shopping cart this weekend when I go to SFRAW.
You mush them or the dog does?
Ok, yes. I might be confusing gagging with choking. I call...
Great info @Dr. Jeff . Yes, this would be last resort kinda stuff. I only have it cuz I bought it before we went holistic (he had a really bad hot spot on his surgery leg from the splint months ago), but his left ear is particularly scabby today, so I wanted to give him a little relief if the...
@GinnyW - I really do want to! The reason I've been putting it off is because (1) I have a few questions and (2) I don't have any bandwidth for the stress caused by something going wrong. The idea of Bobby choking (or cracking teeth) scares me silly, so I need to have my head wrapped around RMBs...
My goal is to simply make eating more interesting and stimulating. He's not a super fast eater, so that's not an issue, but it feels more species appropriate that he would have to work a little for his food (and the Kongs come in handy if we're trying to keep him entertained for longer). He does...
Bobby's ears have been red, itchy, scabby, flakey (in varying degrees, sometimes better, sometimes worse) since March (BEAM has been good this whole time, but you can tell he's getting tired of his itchy ears and me constantly messing with his ears to treat them, but if I don't, he scratches...
Does anyone here put your dog's raw food in Kongs? If so, how do you keep your dog from getting bits of raw food/raw food slobber all over the place? When Bobby used to eat fresh cooked food in Kongs, I'd have him eat on a towel, but he didn't always stay there. Or is the raw food contamination...
@LilF - Excellent post! I hear you about being wary. I do have an individualized evaluation with Dr. Jeff. He and I think a lot alike and he's sensitive to my fears as well (and makes me laugh, which is a bonus! I definitely need that.) And his accessibility and super fast response time is I...
A friend of mine has an aging father in India who's losing his home, and she's trying to get him here to the States in a hurry, but is hitting wall after wall. Please send her good vibes and spiritual support, in whatever form you're most comfortable with. She's an amazing Reiki healer and...
Ha! I love Bob Newhart and Mo Collins. Thanks so much for the laugh!
Very true. And I think that's where I feel a bit stuck these days: I can't necessarily trust the conventional research, but on the alternative side, there's a lot of faith-based and anecdotal evidence (which could be easily...
We're definitely naturally protecting him from mosquitos the best we can. We can't use strong smelling products, because they're distressing to Bobby, but I've been using many non-smelling options. I'm spraying the yards with Wondercide today as an outdoor barrier.
Thanks as always for your input @Dr. Jeff! What's the optimal timing for the tests? I know that Dr. Christina suggested one about now or June. When should the second one be? Also, should I get both the antigen AND the microfilariae test? The odds are low that he would be positive since his last...
Good idea @aruna - I'm in San Mateo in the SF Bay Area of California. We do live within a 5-min walk of the Bay, where there are some swampy areas of standing water. Other than that, it's the suburbs.
Side note: If anyone's used the HealthGene D319 Canine Heartworm (Diofilaria immitis) test...
@aruna - Thanks! Yes, I have read that. I think I'm leaning back away from HW meds again. My parents nor my husband's parents never used them (and neither set were holistic minded in the slightest), and all their dogs did fine. I don't think I could fully relax with either option, so I might as...
@LilF - Thanks for the reassurance. We also live in an area low in HW incidences (SF Bay Area, CA), so I do have that on my side. My parents apparently never gave their dogs HW meds either (or even flea/tick preventatives; they just treated fleas when they happened), and their dogs were kibble...
@LilF - Yeah, it crossed my mind to ask for an MSDS as well (just to see if they'd produce one). I'm not too concerned about safety, since the individual ingredients are pretty non-toxic from what I've read. For me, it's more that a company shouldn't be making claims they can't back up (and I...
Members: I'm still waffling on whether to use conventional heartworm larvacide (cuz it's not prevention!). Obviously we have the toxic nature of HW meds on one side, and on the other side, we have the potential risk of HW itself. I'm hyper focused on optimizing Bobby's health, but he's still...
So I contacted Cedarcide, because I wanted to see some of their data about the efficacy of Cedarcide Original and they wrote back saying that "we've had many third party tests conducted by universities over the last 20 years." Awesome! So I requested to see the most recent 5 or so (any, really)...
@Dr. Jeff - So after some research about TRF (Cyplexinol), I'm not so sure how I feel about it yet. The only case study data I can find on Cyplexinol specifically has been written by two of the board members (James Scaffidi and Daniel Tripodi) of ZyCal who make Cyplexinol. That's a little too...
