Mastitis in nursing female dog

Hi All!

Eva (lagotto romangolo dog, 2.5 years, first litter ) is doing good with her puppies, they have been steadily gaining weight and have all doubled in size since being born. yesterday they turned a week old, and when we weighed them, they still gained weight yesterday, but not as much as the other days. Evas nipples have some scabbing, especially the back few. they all seem to be producing milk still and the puppies are nursing, but some of them have a bit of a purple tinge to the nipples. Evas temperature is 100.4 and she is acting normal, but I want to be cautious about potential developing mastitis. The nipples aren't hard at all, but they are discolored. We did a cabbage compress on her, and have been doing hot compresses a few times a day. Are there any other natural remedies we can try, or should we get her into a vet? She's acting perfectly happy and not running a fever, but still the discoloration is a bit concerning. Any opinions or advice would be helpful! Thank you so much

Fantastic to hear about the happy pups and Eva's high BEAM!

In my experience, if she seems fine and puppies are getting their fill of milk, then what you're already doing is perfect.

Thickening, discoloration and scabbing can all be consequences from tissue "trauma" of nursing.

That being said, if you're concerned then perhaps see if you can contact your vet today and send her/him the pics you shared in this thread.

Happy holidays Natalie!
