Hi @Dr. Jean Hofve @Dr. Christina @Dr. Jeff
I have two 4.5 month old kittens, Buffy and Angel (girl and boy tabbies, neither neutered/spayed) and I've been having a hard time getting their food and poops right. They were pooping each once a day on half raw and half "Raised Right" brand lightly cooked commercial frozen "raw". This was short lived because Buffy is verrry particular about what she eats. I changed their food to all raw (Red Dog Blue Kat brand) and they stopped pooping for 6 days and 8 days! The vet said they likely have too much bone in the all raw. This was when they were at 3 days without pooping, so she doesn't yet know they've been going even longer than that. I'll be going back to see her next week.
Since then I've checked out the forum here lots about cat constipation that helped me to not panic, and I have been trying to make my own raw (meat and organs with added filtered water and powder to make it balanced --Hilary's blend brand). And they're still not pooping much more frequently but Buffy is now down to 5 days and Angel still hasn't pooped at 6 days. This has been going on for about a month. It coincided with them getting their second does of RCP vaccine. I gave them both fresh aloe gel in water to help the build up move along, which did help but I find I'm still having to do that every couple days. When they do poo, theyre about 6 inches long, and dark brown colour, seem healthy consistency (but not dry like I've read feeding raw can do). I added some canned organic pumpkin to this next batch of raw, time will tell if that helps. I've also started to feed them a little less each serving but broken into more servings through out the day. Around 130-140 grams per day. They each weigh 7 lbs (Angel boy) and 5.5 lbs (Buffy girl)
Both their BEAMS seem good. They pee a few times a day each a good amount. The boy Angel has less energy than Buffy typically but he was also seeming pretty uncomfortable and less energetic when he didn't poop for 8 days. So far at 6 days without, he seems to have good energy. Their appetites never lessen. No vomit. I got an extra litter box just in case that helps, and I scoop them both frequently.
Any advice? I'm a bit worried I've given them megacolon from googling in fear :/
Thank you!
