Safe shampoo to use on cat with "stud tail"

Corn starch is great for stud tail and overall greasieness- just sprinkle generously, let sit for 5-10 min and brush out- it helps dematting, too.

    Sedation for cat grooming

Hi Alexa- As Dr. Jeff mentioned, using a really yummy, novel treat may help- but you may have to back up even more by desensitizing to the brush- show the brush, treat on repeat until the cats see the brush as a good thing, then one stroke, and treat, and so on. If they are matted, a soft brush...

    Puppy bites hands and feet

I'm not familar with either of those woods, but in general, be careful with very hard chewables- especially linear ones like antlers, as they can cause tooth fracturing/ slab fractures, in my experience. Raw bones are my favorite- - especially knuckle or "soup" bones.

    Puppy bites hands and feet

I'm sorry for the delay replying! Yes, play- biting and mouthing are very normal puppy behaviors, with the retrieving breeds possibly getting an extra helping of oral fixation! Zero tolerance is the best defense, with some age- appropriate guidelines. As Dr. Jeff suggested, just "ouch!" ing...

Atypical raising of hackles upon meeting another dog?

Atypical raising of hackles upon meeting another dog?

Hey Danielle- How old is Bobby? Is he intact? Are you aware of the ages and sex of the other dogs? Did the hackles go up just at his shoulders or all the way down his back? Uncertainty is common in adolescents, and/or the other dogs could have been using body language or eye contact that was...

    Lucy tips on house/crate training

Hi Celina- Do you crate her at all now? How does she act when she's in there? For now, I would get her a snuffle mat or activity mat and use it inside the crate to get her happy about being in there without you having anything to do with the activity. It might be very helpful for you to work...

Managing Symptoms in Pets and People Through BEAMing and Breathing

This is great, and I so enjoyed our conversation today, including (especially) the part about "going with the flow". We stagnate, or worse, misdirect SO MUCH productive energy fighting against the natural flow. Adapting to the natural ebb and flow isn't always easy in our desire to try to...

Car safety - advice about hammock or "car seat" for 40 pound elder dog

If you can easily fit a crate in the car, that is by far the safest option, but any well- fitting and non- restrictive harness attached to the seatbealt or headrest is better than nothing. Certainly the seatbealts made for dogs are a great option as long as they fit your dog. The main objective...

At- home medical shaving for pets

Nan asked : re: how to best shave fur off of and around a tumor on a kitty to ensure any topical (Yunnan baiyao) penetrates the skin more effectively. IF you are going to attempt to shave any hair off your pet for any reason, please get a pet clipper designed for this purpose. Oster...

    Holistic Actions! for the win!

Empowerment and homeopathy for the win! I’ve been using homeopathy since the mid 1990’s, but it’s “magic” never fails to amaze me. If you attend the EH’s, you might have seen my Pug Tebow. He’s a sweet and goofy boy who crashes through life like he’s been shot out of a cannon. Several times...

    Super Barky and Demanding

Here's a link- TTouch body wrap Yes, nosework at home (box drills/ hides ) might help keep her mentally occupied and help with excess or nervous energy. Threatening is generally not advised. If you're moved to get the bottle, use the bottle! Looking forward to hearing how it goes!

    Super Barky and Demanding

I have to echo Drs Jeff and Christina's advice- patience- but in a different way! Barking has paid off for her, and you have inadverdantly taught her that persistence eventually pays off, because you eventually give in and treat her. So, you can wait for quiet and reward that or you can find a...

    Barking puppy

Hi Frances- So glad you participated in the seminar and found it useful. The yapping at her sounds fairly normal for a puppy trying to get his housemate to interact- even if he gets her to snark at him and chase him a bit, that's better than nothing if he's bored. You mention anxiety- how...

Relaxation Training and Decreasing Noise Sensitivity

Since we talked about using Conditioned Reinforcers in the Tstorm/ Noise fear EH last night, I thought I'd post this to help you get started: Even before you get that first behavior, you want to establish a Conditioned Reinforcer (CR). A CR is something that your dog has learned to like by...
